Various forms of online gambling are legal in most of the countries of the European Union. There are some exceptions, however. For instance, Canada has a limited number of provinces that allow internet gambling. In addition, several Caribbean nations permit it.<\/p>\n
However, the United States has had a long history of regulating internet gambling. As the Internet became popular in the late 1990s, legislation was drafted on the topic. A bill was introduced in the US Senate that would have made online gambling illegal. This was followed by a bill that was introduced in the House. The bill was not successful.<\/p>\n
There are two issues with the legislation. First, it is unclear how much power the federal government has in this area. Secondly, there are concerns over the constitutionality of the Commerce Clause.<\/p>\n
The law is designed to protect the public from unlicensed gambling. It does not protect individuals’ privacy, however. Online gambling is not protected by the First Amendment.<\/p>\n
Although the US Department of Justice has taken steps to enforce its gambling laws, there have been a few cases challenging the authority of the federal government. These have centered around the Commerce Clause, the First Amendment, and a few other factors.<\/p>\n
One of these cases, United States v. Nicolaou, took place in the Fourth Circuit. The owner of Seals with Clubs, a bitcoin poker website, argued that cryptocurrencies are not a currency and thus are not recognized as such by the federal government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
